Upon hearing several melodious voices in the San Francisco Bay Area, Fr. John Kocolas was inspired to organize a female Byzantine choir. Through the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos, Melodia was formed. Bilingual female choirs in the Byzantine tradition are unfortunately rare,

and the choir hopes to inspire others to grow their love for ecclesiastical music and the divine services.

Melodia (μελωδία) means melody, and emphasizes the goal of this specific choir: to promote the melodies of Orthodox ecclesiastical music. For this reason, Melodia professionally recorded prominent Orthodox hymns in Greek and English, with the prayer that it encourages familiarity and even memorization by the Orthodox faithful.
